Treating Patients Under 21 Years of Age

When it comes to dentistry, baby teeth are just as important as adult teeth. A pediatric dentist is specially trained and qualified to protect your child’s oral health.

The American Dental Association (ADA) recognizes pediatric dentistry as a specialty and therefore requires dentists to undertake two or three years of additional training after completing a general dentistry degree.

It involves classes specifically about treating the oral health of children from birth through adolescence, as well as psychology classes to understand children and how to work with them.

Although baby teeth will fall out eventually, your child will have those teeth for several years. Without proper dental care, children face possible oral decay and disease that can cause pain and complications. It is of paramount importance that children find their “dental home” as early as possible.

Pediatric dentists provide anticipatory guidance to parents, advise parents on disease prevention, trauma prevention, diet counseling, and other aspects of the home hygiene routine. They also monitor children’s growth and development, anticipate dental issues, and quickly intervene before they worsen.

As for behavior guidance, pediatric dentists know how to cope with children’s fears and anxiety and put them at ease. Some children may exhibit behavior challenges or become anxious when being cared for in the dental setting.

As a result, they may not be able to relax or sit still long enough to receive treatment. In some instances, a pediatric dentist may suggest the option of using medicine to assist with challenging behavior.

Giving medicine to treat anxiety or challenging behavior is known as sedation. It can be provided at varying levels defined by mild, moderate, deep sedation and / or general anesthesia.

At Shiow Jiin Jaw, D.D.S, we treat patients under age 21. We provide nitrous oxide analgesic, mild oral conscious sedation, IV sedation, and general anesthesia. Our office is equipped with FREE Wi-Fi and TVs on the ceiling in the operating room. Your child will get a warm and caring environment when you choose us.

My dad and I went to Dr. Jaw’s office for a dental check up. She and her assistants were all really nice. They even have screens on the ceiling so you can watch TV during the visit!
